upwards - noah got game

This year Noah is on the Lions, and he's looking pretty good!  I love how he encourages his teammates and looks to make everyone else better.  Have I mentioned before that he loves balls?  Any ball, really.  Just wave a ball in front of him and he will fetch, catch, or throw.  I love this kid.

Ava Roo
This was her first year doing full court!  She did great!  We loved watching her grow this year.  Her team was a blast and Ava really loved both of her coaches.

Noah J
This year Brian helped coach Noah's team! It was a fun season and Noah loved having Daddy coach. He's getting so big. I loved his team spirit, this guy really cared about his teammates.

women's ncaa tourney

Both the kids played basketball this year, and since the tickets were free (thank you WA homeschool association), we decided to field trip-it to the NCAA Women's Basketball tourney.  I had no idea who was playing, and the kids couldn't care less.  They would have cheered for any team.

As it turned out, however, the game we saw was Oregon vs. Washington State.  Ava couldn't pick a side but boy did she cheer her little heart out.  There was a group of kids about her age in the next section over...I could almost see the tinge of green on her skin.  She wanted to sit with them in the worst way.  At half time the announcer called for all kids to get down to center court.   Ava jumps up, starts climbing over me, and over her shoulder asks "Can I go?"
Me: "Uh...sure?  Don't you want to take Noah?"
Ava: "No, I'm ok."

Off she goes.  This girl, who I thought was my daughter, goes right down to center court and joins the dance party.  They formed a Conga line and everything.  She didn't even know what a Conga line was before today.  Crazy.  Not sure if I should be proud or scared.  As you can see...Noah was super into the games.

upwards season 2015

This was the first year BOTH kids were able to play in the Upwards basketball league.  It was a close call for Noah, the 1st-2nd grade boys filled up fast!  He was on a waiting list, and thankfully Coach Burdon stepped up (as Noah put it in his prayers that night).

Ava "Roo" Coury #15
Team:  Celtics
Coached by: Nate Winegar, Alex, and Hannah

This little girl played her heart out, and wore her game day socks like a champ.  She had a fabulous time with her teammates, and her game improved greatly from last year.  Her coach this year did an outstanding job with the girls.  We wish she could play for him again next year, but this little lady is moving on up to full court!  There were a couple girls she knew from last year, but it was very fun to see her make new friends on this years team.  She scored more baskets this year, had a few steels, played great defense, and most of all had a blast!  See for yourself...

Noah "No-Jack" Coury #13
Team:  Bearcats (and yes, it is a real animal)
Coached by: Brian Burdon, Monica, and Krista

Brian keeps trying to get that nickname to stick...aaaaanyway.

As mentioned before, Noah's season was almost non-existent but thanks to Coach Burdon he was able to play this year.  He was beyond excited.  Daddy even did some wheeling and dealing at Big-5 to get him (and Ava) real basketball shoes.  Noah learned at lot and throughout the season he showed great improvement, especially on defense.  What I loved most about watching Noah was his attitude.  He was encouraging to his teammates, helped his opponent out, and always cheered when someone else on his team did well (see video below).  One particular Saturday, however, stands out in my mind.  The game started at 8:30 AM...that's AM people.  Noah takes after his mama and is not a morning person.  He's usually pretty cheerful, just not awake until after 10.  It was Valentine's day and, per tradition, he had a sugary doughnut for breakfast.  Are you following along at home?  Early morning + sugar-filled breakfast = CRASH.  Noah spend a good portion of this game standing at half court staring into space.  It was pretty hilarious, actually.  Brian wasn't as amused as I was so...the next week when his 8:30 AM game time rolled around Brian woke the poor boy at 6:30 AM to be sure he was fully awake for game time.

Below are a couple videos from Noah's season.  The teammates on the court with him were so much fun to watch.  Mikey, Charlie (my personal favorite for his flare!), Ben (Noah's twin), Tony (adorable little guy in the glasses), and Noah.  Enjoy!

At the end of each season there is an awards ceremony. Each team gets to get up on the stage and wave to their parents. There's also a drawing for a gift baskets made up of all the left-over goodies from the concessions. Brian, of course, wins. I never win anything...my husband, wins. Front row parking every single time we go anywhere. Unbelievable. Check out this loot!!!!!

upwards - final game

Playing Upwards basketball this year has been wonderful for Ava.  She has come so far this season and we are PROUD of her! We have loved watching her grow through this experience.  After the last game Ava shed a few tears on the way home.  Poor thing!  She really did love her team and getting to play each week.

One of the moms was smart and brought a sharpie pen for the girls to sign each others shirts. I mean...look at Ava's face...she is LOVING it.

upwards game 3

This is for the grands in Arizona....and Uncle Seth cause I know he'll be super impressed with the skills happening here.  I think this was Ava's third game.  I'll record some of her last game too and we'll see if there's a difference!  I love her face whether she's playing "offense" or "defense," it's always in a smile.  It helps that she's guarding her friend Railey.

My favorite part is that she is LOVING every minute and making some sweet friends. Thankful for the Upwards program and all the coaches, referees, and others who give up their time for this ministry.  We are careful about what our kiddos participate in and this has proven to be an excellent program.

a special moment

My sweet Ava girl is my first born and I love her for so many reasons.  She has never really been a big snuggler, even from the time she was little, but when she does it's the best.  If you catch her in those magical early hours she is quite the snuggler and definitely her most cheerful self.

For the last six Saturday's we've been going to Ava's Upwards basketball games.  This is her first real team experience and it's been fun for her to learn the game of basketball.  Her favorite part, however, has to be cheering on her teammates from the bench.  It makes my heart smile when I hear her little voice leading the same chant over and over....dragging the rest of her bench-mates along with her.  LETS GO PANTHERS LETS GO!  (clap..clap..clap).  Rinse and repeat

What do these two things have in common?  Hold on to your hats cause the two worlds are about to collide creating a special moment.  Ava was playing in her third period of the game, the Panthers had just scored, and she was headed down to play defense.  Brian, Noah, and I were sitting about half court and much to my shock Ava made a quick stop to give me a kiss.  Queue my jaw dropping to the floor.  Best.  Game.  Ever.
