arizona: hiking

We went on two hikes during our trip; Piestewa Peak and the "waterfall hike."

Piestewa Peak - Named after SPC Lori Ann Piestewa. Formerly Squaw Peak. She was a member of the Hopi tribe, and the first woman in the U.S. armed forces killed in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. She's also the first Native American woman to die in combat while serving with the U.S. military in world history.

Resting and waiting for Papa to pick us up. If you look at Ava you'll see her poor little knee. My feeling on minor injuries is to pick yourself up and dust it off. In this case, however, I watched her fall pretty hard down hill on rocks. It wasn't a pleasant thud when her little body hit the ground. Fruit roll-ups make everything better.

The "waterfall" hike - Poor Nana had a really bad headache and very upset stomach. We (Papa, Katie, myself) took Ava to see the....uh....waterfall. The little pool is all that's left, but the kids found a way to make the most of it. There were three other little boys that were throwing rocks in the water, and climbing on anything they possibly could. Ava observed for a minute, then joined in. By watching them she became quite adventurous, my little mountain goat.

Papa and Ava would race to see who could get to the next shady spot.

...she even got Papa to jog!
